Description

"When his Runner's egg is claimed by the City, they have few options in getting it back. With it's location hidden and heavily guarded, they can't find and retrieve it in time before it before it hatches - but they can buy it, and they will get the money in any way they can. They start on a dangerous path to gain what they need, but will they get caught or get lost on this dark road forever?"

With this duo, the human is considered the Leader as it is he the player controls, but the priority and narrative drive comes from the Follower, as it is her story being told. This pair was designed to compliment each other, through similar colour schemes and relatable fashion and accessories. Their personalities balanced each other to make a unit, where the human was slightly lazy and easy going, while the Runner was more forward and active. The colours are mainly subdued to show their authoritative qualities, with splashes of brighter colour to show wealth and make the designs pop. As official Runners, they wear the City symbol of their station, and both's attire reflect their respectful position.

Brief
This research project studies the design and role of duo companion characters in video games, using a practise-based methodology. The perceived issue of their role is the validation of their paired presence, and how they can be effectively designed as a way to immerse the player to achieve a satisfying emotional and entertaining experience. Criteria for a critical framework was developed based from research on duo character games and design theories, then further explored in case studies and media tests. The combined analysis of the research and experiments then influenced the practical outcomes of the project, forming a potential solution in a pipeline process of designing duo companion characters with consideration to their aesthetic creativity, narrative environment, player interaction, and implementation platform, based on their role archetype.

Project Duration: September 2013 to May 2014.
