Description

"When a Mother Tree dies and a new seed is needed to restore the land, an Earth Giant is given the task of carrying it within his body, keeping it safe and nurtured. But given the seed's value, fear of an attack leads the Guardian Tribe to send one of their own to protect the friendly creature as they journey across the region."

This duo's archetype reflects their theoretical gameplay in that the female as Leader is controlled by the player, and the Giant is the complimentary Follower. There is a hierarchy expectation switch, in role, gender, and design, created with a theme of opposites in mind. The Giant is large and made to look ready for combat, but is actually friendly and shy, made up of rectangles and triangles. The female human is small and gentle in appearance, but is actually a fierce fighter, made up of rectangles and circles. Each character's colour scheme is lightly influenced by the other, as well as having hints of visual interest to appear as if they belong together. The Giant is mostly red, which misleads the player as it is an active colour that usually has connotations to anger, passion and violence; while the human has a wider spectrum with turquoise and red as main features, suggesting she is cool headed, but can become aggressive.

Brief
This research project studies the design and role of duo companion characters in video games, using a practise-based methodology. The perceived issue of their role is the validation of their paired presence, and how they can be effectively designed as a way to immerse the player to achieve a satisfying emotional and entertaining experience. Criteria for a critical framework was developed based from research on duo character games and design theories, then further explored in case studies and media tests. The combined analysis of the research and experiments then influenced the practical outcomes of the project, forming a potential solution in a pipeline process of designing duo companion characters with consideration to their aesthetic creativity, narrative environment, player interaction, and implementation platform, based on their role archetype.

Project Duration: September 2013 to May 2014.
